Self-Care Essentials

 


The beauty of self- caring is, it does not have to be an  expensive duty. Going to a fancy spa, or buying something expensive in the name of ‘self-care’ is not a necessity. There are many ways to take care of ourselves without having to spend a substantial amount of money. There is a quote that I love which says "The little things matter," and I believe that it's the little activities that we do in the comfort of our home, which will assist us to become better mentally, physically and spiritually.

So we’ve decided to self-care but what are some tools that we’ll need:

Mental Self care

Mental self-care involves freeing the mind from unwanted thoughts, and stress, so that it can be energized and filled with positivity each day. And you can have peace of mind.

Affirmations

The words you speak become the house you live in.     HAFIZ

Affirmations which are basically words of encouragement, can do great things. Affirmations is a great way to start the day with a positive energy as you are telling your mind how amazing you are and all that you will, and can do. Having daily affirmations can boost confidence and just provide an overall empowering feeling. There are many great affirmations on line; however, writing your own affirmations is so much better as it speaks about your very own struggles. When writing affirmations:

1.       Think about all the negative thoughts you have

2.        Change them to positive thoughts

3.        Think about all your goals

4.        Declare that  you will achieve them

5.       Write your affirmations and then repeat affirmations daily

Journal

If you like to write, journaling is a perfect way to free the mind. When you journal there are no limits to what you can and cannot write are how much you write. It’s simply writing whatever you feel, your likes, needs, for example writing about your day, places you would like to visit etc. And if you aren’t sure what to write about there are hundreds of journal prompts on pinterest. Journaling allows you to escape into a whole different world you get to create, as well as, it provides an opportunity to release pent up feelings, ideas ; just whatever you need to let out.





Music

Music is another completely free tool essential for self-care. If you’re a music lover you’ll know that there is so much that music can do. The right music has the abilities to uplift your spirit and fill your mind with pure positivity and have you feeling as you can take on the whole world.



Reading materials

I do believe something very magical can happen when you read a good book. J. k. Rowling

Reading has the ability to calm the mind. So spend your days reading a good book, poems, articles or a blog post. If you don’t have the time for a lengthy book, there are many great short stories and poems out there.

Movies

Watch old movies, new movies, cartoon, anime, and series. Whatever makes you happy and helps with clearing your cluttered mind. Also try new things such as documentaries on wild life, they might sound boring but are in fact really interesting and soothing.

Physical Self-care

Physical self-care includes taking care of the body both inside and outside, so that includes eating healthy, looking after your hair, face and ensuring the body is energized. Here are a few essentials for physical self- care:

Exercise

Exercising is a great way to take care of our body, and it’s all about just finding a routine that’ll work with you.  Exercising has many benefits, such as:

  •           Helps with weight control
  •           Reduces risks of chronic disease
  •           Good for muscles and bones
  •           Keeps skin healthy
  •           Can increase energy levels

Sleep

There is so much to do and so little time. Sleeping can sometimes not find its way on our list of priorities. However it is in fact very important for our bodies to restore itself.

Interesting sleep facts

  •           Humans spend 1/3 of their life sleeping
  •           Two thirds of a cat’s life is spent asleep
  •           Sleep deprivation may trigger sleep paralysis 
  •           Dysania is a state of finding it hard to get out of bed 
  •           Sleep deprivation is more detrimental to the body than food deprivation
  •           Approximately 72 hours of sleep deprivation can cause hallucinations to occur

Food

Food is vital for the body to survive, especially the right kinds of food. So, stop putting off eating in order to finish that assignment or because you are too caught up in a movie or book. Also, ensure to eat food that is beneficial for the brain and your overall body.   Fact: apples are one of the healthiest fruits in the world.


Water

The human body can only survive a few days without water that in itself explains just how vital water is for self-care.

Spiritual Self-care

Spiritual self-care is engaging with the Lord’s word and practicing obedience, so that we may build and strengthen an honest relationship with our creator. Hence important tools for spiritual self-care include:

Bible/ bible app

Having a bible is a necessity; so that you can connect with God’s word at all time the good thing is we don’t need the physical bible at all time. There are great bible apps on the app store and play store, such as YouVersion.

Journal

A journal proves useful for spiritual self- care, given that it’s suitable for writing prayers and personal notes to God as well as writing favourite bible verses



Music 

Music is not only suited for mental self-care but is also important for spiritual self-care. The right music will get us in the mood for worship

Bible study

Spending time to study the bible is essential for spiritual growth, therefore set apart a few minutes of your time daily to be with God’s word.
